Gastric Bypass Surgery – Obesity Surgery in Mexico

About Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is one of the most popular types of weight loss surgery at Dr Castaneda´s state-of-the-art hospitals in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. The surgery is designed to reduce the size of the stomach and shorten the length of the small intestine, a gastric bypass allows food that is eaten to bypass most of the stomach and part of the intestine. This means that only a small amount of food is needed to create a feeling of fullness and fewer calories are therefore consumed. This can make a great difference to an obese person who is trying to lose weight.

Gastric Bypass Procedure

There is no need to fear pain during a gastric bypass procedure as it is conducted under general anesthesia, which causes you to sleep throughout the entire operation. The surgery usually takes between one and three hours. A small incision is made in the abdomen by the surgeon and is referred to as a keyhole surgery. During the surgery, the surgeon uses small instruments to perform the procedure with the help of a telescopic camera. A drain may also be inserted to remove any fluid or blood that may collect in the stomach during the procedure.
For persons who are extremely overweight or have had previous surgery performed on the abdomen, an open operation which involves a larger incision is usually recommended. After the incision is made, the surgeon will make a pouch out of the top of the stomach using surgical staples. This separates the top part of the stomach from the lower part. An opening is then made in the pouch and it is connected to a section of the small intestine. The incision is then closed by the surgeon using stitches or small metal clips. A dressing will be applied to cover the wound.
